The image of Jesus as the good shepherd is such a familiar one. Who has this picture from their First Holy Communion? Sometimes the image becomes over familiar and may cease to engage us.

Let us think about the image in the light of “Jesus IS the good shepherd”. In Jesus’ time shepherds generally were not regarded as particularly good people, they often failed their responsibilities and actually took advantage of their charges, so the choice of image that Jesus used is a deliberate one to unsettle the listeners of the time. Jesus IS the good shepherd, the one who does not abandon his flock, the one who has concern for his sheep; the one who will lay down his own life for his sheep.

The final verses of the passage make an interesting extension to the image of the shepherd and sheep. Unlike the ‘sacrificial lamb’ the good shepherd chooses to lay down his life, of his own free will and also has the power to take it up again.

For all of it’s romantic appeal, naming Jesus as our good shep…

A message from Pope Francis World Day of Vocations

‘It will not fill our hearts if we keep standing by the window with the excuse of waiting for the right time, without accepting this very day the risk of making a decision. Vocation is today! The Christian mission is now! Each one of us is called to become a witness of the Lord, here and now. ‘We should not wait to be perfect in order to respond with our generous “yes”, nor be fearful of our limitations and sins, but instead open our hearts to the voice of the Lord.’

The Catechist meeting is on 10 May at 7pm  in St Martin’s Hall.

See you there.

As we begin Term 2 let us say this prayer for the Students we teach:

Lord our God, We thank you that you made each one of us in your image and likeness, and that we are all your beloved children. We pray for the students we teach, those who make us smile and those who challenge us.  We thank you for all the students who have an impact on our lives and for the privilege of having an impact on their lives.  Lord, use those we teach to teach us.  Help us to be Christ-like at all times; seeing each one with your eyes and valuing them with your heart of love.  We ask this prayer in the name of Jesus our teacher. Amen

The Father Factor

If there were some practical things I can do to build my relationship with my children as a father, what would they be? How much of my life is affected by a good relationship with my father? To find some answers to these questions and more, come and see Robert Falzon, acclaimed author and speaker of the ‘Father Factor’ seminars. He will be addressing the important role of fathers in society, providing practical information on being an intentional father and recovering from absent fathering. All most welcome, in particular, fathers.
